An incomprehensive summary of YWOT history.

Pre-release[edit | edit source]

Andrew Badr, the creator of Your World of Text, drew inspiration for YWOT from Google Maps, the original Facebook Wall, and the infinite nature of the universe.

YWOT is believed to be the first infinite canvas on the internet.

Early Days(August 4th, 2009 - September 23rd)[edit | edit source]

August 2nd, 2009: The YWOT domain is registered.

August 4th, 2009: YWOT is advertised on Hacker News.

August 4th - 6th, 2009: YWOT is advertised across multiple 4chan boards, introducing hordes of users to the newly created site.

August 9th, 2009: YWOT reaches the top of r/programming.

August 25th, 2009: YWOT gains popularity on Chrome Experiments.

August 27th, 2009: Andrew opens beta testing for user accounts.

May 31st - June 6th, 2010: The subworld known as /msernst experiences a rapid rise in popularity.

June 8th, 2010: Rate limits are added to curb spam scripts.

  • Andrew creates Our World of Text as a version of YWOT where scripters can spam without restrictions.

September 11th, 2010: The YWOT Fandom wiki is created by Akiake, who disappeared soon after and left the wiki to decay in stagnancy for the next decade.

Vsauce Explosion, Golden Age(2011 - 2013)[edit | edit source]

March 29th, 2011: Vsauce features YWOT in a video, ushering in the most active period in the site's history.

  • To this day Vsauce is the primary avenue through which new users discover YWOT.

2012: User Spacenut creates a list of subworlds at /comprehensive.

June 9th, 2012: /msernst blows up once again, owing to a reddit post which details u/ProtrudedDemands' spiritual journey down an ASCII line.

August 2012: /~orson_welles/4chansports is advertised across 4chan and experiences rapid growth over the course of roughly three days.

September 19th, 2012: Andrew publishes a new website named Jotleaf.

  • In Jotleaf, users could add text, images and sound files to infinite canvases similar to YWOT.

December 21st - 23rd:[1] Andrew locks the Mainpage for Christmas, making it so that only Mormons could make edits.

  • At least two more lockdowns of the Mainpage would occur after this.

Spam Wars, Dark Times(2013)[2][edit | edit source]

Early 2013: Many users begin advocating for a Member-Only YWOT in order to combat spam.

  • Many users change the color of their worlds in order to mourn his departure.

July 8th, 2013: Andrew changes the naming format for user worlds.

  • Users used to be able to claim subworlds, now they generate worlds based on the "/~username/worldname" format.

July 2013: A user named Lol007 gains notoriety for leaking scripts and griefing worlds.

  • They were once part of InfraRaven's circle.

  • Several users retaliated by DDOSing Lol007's pages.
