YWOT Iceberg
*Note: The logic by which different things are arranged is kind of random(or rather, biased based on the order I discovered things). If I want to properly categorize everything on this list then I might have to rearrange 60% of the entire diagram. But in any case the purpose of the iceberg is less to provide an objective ranking than to just get information out there. There aren't any many comprehensive sources on YWOT so I hope that the iceberg is useful in that regard.
The YWOT Iceberg is a version of the iceberg trend which includes various factoids from YWOT history. The iceberg is divided into 8 tiers, categorized by how well-known each factoid is.
The iceberg was created by Credrscr on June 30th, 2024 and has since been updated multiple times. Additionally, multiple other users have contributed to the iceberg, with Yosicat providing many factoids about the early history of YWOT.
Information on the iceberg is taken from the site itself, the Unofficial Discord, the YWOT History Github, the YWOT 2015/2010 Archives, and a variety of other sources. It is not a finalized list and factoids will be added and rearranged over time.
Tier 1[edit | edit source]
ASCII Art: Art made using keyboard characters and unicodes. ASCII art in YWOT can be manually created, generated from a filter or copied from elsewhere on the internet.
Vsauce: Made a video on YWOT which now has over 2 million views. Since 2011, most YWOT users have found the site through Vsauce.
Spawn Box: The uneditable grey box at the center of the spawn point.
Spam: Can be manually typed but is most often pasted. Spam decreases in density the further you get away from the spawn point, but expect the most ungodly of sights to be regularly spammed at the center.
Tier 2[edit | edit source]
Unofficial Discord: A discord server created by Grady964 on November 26th, 2016. At some point, an invite link to the server was put on the Spawn Box and since then it has amassed 1,031 members(most of which are inactive).
The link was removed from the Spawn Box on September 24th, 2021(though it can still be found at other locations, such as /~help).
Grady964's server is considered "unofficial" as it is not affiliated with Andrew Badr, the creator of YWOT. It does, however, contain many notable users such as Infraraven(a YWOT admin) and /~fp/(an OWOT developer).
/forexample: Has been included as an example for how to create subpages since YWOT's creation in 2009.[1]
OWOT: Our World of Text is a sister site to YWOT which has more features(Ex. pasting, teleporting, a global chat, a zoom slider, colors).
The original OWOT was created by Andrew Badr in 2010.[2] In 2015, ownership of OWOT was transferred to user /~JerryStarField/ who would manage the site until its closure in late 2016. A new OWOT was created later that year under new ownership(presumably Infraraven though /~fp/ is also involved as a developer).
Deep City: The city at [X:0 Y:-1000]. Deep City is one of the most popular landmarks in YWOT as scrolling straight down is an intuitive instinct for most users.
fog/lag: Lag in YWOT is commonly referred to as fog due to it taking the form of grey chunks. Most often the fog is barely noticeable, but sometimes it becomes a serious issues; you'll learn about those instances somewhere lower on the iceberg.
Sky City: The city at [X:0 Y:1000]. Sky City is perhaps the most popular landmark in YWOT as scrolling up is an even greater temptation than scrolling down.
The Nirvana: The city at [X:0 Y:10000], which most travelers see as the final destination of the North Road. Very few users reach the Nirvana legitimately, with most people teleporting to it or hearing about it from someone else.
Unlike Sky City or Deep City, the city at Y:10000 has been named Nirvana since 2010. As a result it has the longest history out of any landmarks in YWOT.
North + South Roads: The two most popular roads in all of YWOT as most users would rather scroll up/down then right/left.
r/textworldexplorers: The most popular YWOT subreddit(which isn't saying a lot).
r/textworldexplorers was created in 2012 by travelers of the /msernst line. Its original purpose has been largely forgotten, however, and today it acts as a general YWOT forum.
TV Tropes: Your World of Text's TV Tropes page was created by Yosicat in July 14th, 2022.
OWOP: Our World of Pixels is an infinite pixel canvas that draws its naming format from YWOT and OWOT. OWOP is owned by Infraraven and has what seems to be the largest userbase out of all the "[X] World of [Y]" sites, being present on both the 2022 and 2023 r/place canvases.
Andrew Badr: Created YWOT in 2009.
YWOT Twitter: Linked on the "About Your World of Text" page. The YWOT Twitter is where Andrew Badr announces updates to the site.
Fandom Wiki: You were there, now you are on the new wiki.
The YWOT Fandom Wiki was created sometime in 2010 and has been dead for the vast majority of its history. The original admin, an enigmatic user named Akiake, last touched the wiki on September 12th, 2010 and has not been seen ever since.
Despite being dead, the Fandom wiki still shows up when you google "Your World of Text" and as a result it has received sporadic updates over the years.
Several events relating to the YWOT Fandom wiki are featured lower in the iceberg.
Tier 3[edit | edit source]
True Diagonal: A popular diagonal line in the mainpage that contains a number of settlements, namely Shabby Towne, The Great Unexplored and Superhell. The True Diagonal becomes largely empty after a certain point though it has since been extended a considerable amount by The Goosh.
The True Diagonal is seen by some users(namely the hosts of the Cult or Just Weird podcast) as the successor to the /msernst line, another popular path from 2012. You'll learn more about /msernst later on in the iceberg.
Omega City: The city at [X:0 Y:-10000]. Most people see Omega City as the final destination of the South Road.
Omega City doesn't seem to be as well known as Nirvana and most messages along the South Road refer to the Y:-10000 settlement as "Hell."
The Highlands: The city at [X:10000 Y:0]. Most people see it as the final destination of the East Road.
Of all the cardinal 10k landmarks, The Highlands is(?are?) arguably the most obscure. Most messages on the East Road refer to the X:10000 settlement as "The Promised Land."
Oregonis: The city at [X:-10000 Y:0]. Oregonis is surprisingly not seen as the final destination of the West Road as -16k Village is advertised multiple times along the path.
-16k Village: The city at [X-16000 Y:0]. -16k Village is advertised throughout the West Road but is not its end; that would be the fabled settlement of Zambonia, which is a later entry on the iceberg.
Fog Incursion: Refers to an extended period where YWOT is consistently laggy.
So far the only event referred to as a "Fog Incursion" is the Great Ywotian Fog of 2024.
Teleporting: It is possible to teleport via scripts and as a result most major landmarks feature large populations of teleporters. Teleportation has also been used to reach very far off coordinates, some of which will be discussed farther down on the iceberg.
World Directory: The World Directory is a google doc created by Grady964. It features an extensive list of userpages, though it is quite outdated as the last addition was made on August 14th, 2018.
r/theline: Another YWOT subreddit based around a line in the /reddit subworld.
r/theline was created in 2013 but only contains 13 posts as of today. At one point it was taken over by discussions of a conceptual Saudi Arabia city. Most of these messages have been deleted however, showing that the subreddit's mods are still active against all odds.
Brazilpocalypse: An influx of Brazilian users triggered when the YouTuber goularte uploaded a video featuring YWOT. The sudden arrival of Portuguese-speaking users triggered a massive amount of racist spam, causing Andrew Badr to lock the mainpage on August 10th, 2020.
2020 Lockdown: In effect from August 10th, 2020 to January 6th, 2021.
Goularte: A Brazilian youtuber who uploaded a video featuring YWOT. To this day, you can still find the message "Goularte Passou por aqui" at multiple places in YWOT.
Bubbles: The letter "o" can be interpreted as an ASCII bubble. Large clusters of bubble can be found on the North, South and West Roads(as well as many less known paths) where they are often seen as the only source of oxygen.
West + East Roads: Roads going left and right. Less popular than the vertical roads but still more active than the diagonal lines, seeing as most users would rather scroll left/right than in any non-cardinal directions.
stage.yourworldoftext.com: The place where Andrew Badr tested a new frontend for YWOT.
Stage was part of an 2021 update which increased loading/scrolling speed and implemented improved protection against spam scripts.
Jesse78: Despite not having a presence on the site itself, Jesse (formerly Sausage330) is well known as one of the most active users on the Unofficial YWOT Discord.
They are known for their love for photography, clouds and the internet musician Sewerslvt/Cythoni. They have expressed their hatred for The Janitor and all erasers/griefers in general. Jesse hated bikes at first but eventually converted, after which they started reacting to every message with the :bike: emoji.
The Janitor: "Janitor" is an internet term used to describe any user who cleans spam on YWOT. In 2022, one particular user would take on the mantle of The Janitor. They would thus become one of the most notorious figures in that era of YWOT history(just ask any YWOT user about roombas).
Orpheus: A spammer who covered spawn with slurs for several days. On one occasion they joined the Unofficial Discord where they immediately got into drama. In the midst of an argument Orpheus would surprisingly dox another user. Realizing the severity of their actions, Orpheus left immediately(but not before returning briefly to delete all of their messages).
Orpheus was affiliated with a coalition of spammers called Xyke Hacking Group.
Bunnies: Bunnies are one of the most prolific ASCII creations in Spam Central. It is unclear when the YWOT bunny design was created or who created it, though the design does seem to be original to YWOT.
Since 2020, a number of plot lines have played out in the wider tale of bunnies.
Korieum: A user who appeared in the Unofficial Discord in 2021. They were known for a variety of conflicts at spawn, including a brief feud with The Janitor.
Prior to arriving on YWOT, Korieum was an active user on the Our World of Pixels discord.
InfraRaven: InfraRaven is (presumably) an admin of YWOT. They have been a prominent user on the site since 2011.
Horrifying Vastness of the Void: When a user scrolls far enough away from Spam Central they will inevitably come to grapple with the infinite nature of the site. Existential crises become common as text becomes more and more sparse, giving way to an endless white expanse.
While some fear the void(not to be confused with the black Void), others find the emptiness calming and see it as fertile ground, a place from which art can emerge.
Other users on the other hand simply don't see what the deal is with all this empty space.
Copy Pasting: There are numerous macros that enable users to past large amounts of text all at once. Most often this results in spam, but pasting can also be used to back up and restore text. Most major landmarks(Ex. Sky City) have been griefed and restored numerous times throughout their histories.
Discord Reaction Wars: Some time in 2022 Jesse78 started reacting to every message in the Unofficial Discord with :no_bicycles:. This would soon get out of hand and cause a great deal of controversy, as it came at a time when on-topic discussion in the discord began to plummet.
Kubex300 Mass Griefs: The user Kubex300 has been known on two separate occasions to destroy Spam Central en masse. Their chaotic antics make for some of the most memorable moments in recent YWOT history.
Flowers and Trees: Simple ASCII designs found along all four cardinal roads. While many new travelers admire these growths for their beauty, older explorers lament the fact that they were generated by paste scripts that bulldozed historical messages in the process.
Runnin' Man: A recurring figure that runs along the West and East Roads. Most SPLATOON imagery was created by the SPLATOON Guy, a veteran user of YWOT whose history can be found in South Road.
AMOGUS Virus: A script created by kmccord which replaced all text typed anywhere on the mainpage with "AMOGUS" blocks.
Sammich and Mr. Guy: Two veteran users who at one point pasted their usernames onto every subworld with 1-4 letter names. Most of their signatures have been erased as of 2024.
Mr. Guy has stated in the Unofficial Discord that they once worked on Your World of Text as a developer.-
Explanation of "Sammich was here"
Tier 4[edit | edit source]
"is muh bennis": A phrase that was written beneath the Spawn Box everyday in 2021 and 2022. It's unclear who was behind it.
NW+NE Lines: The most popular diagonal lines. Because if a user has to travel in a non-cardinal direction then they'd much rather go up than down.
Dreamer's Road: An art project founded by travelers of the North Road in 2020. Since then it has grown to be over 8000 coordinates long, with many users contributing to its extension.
YWOT Explorers: A secret society of travelers, founded in 2020 by users from the North Road.
u/ProtrudedDemand: An 2012 traveler who posted on r/AskReddit advertise a diagonal line from the world /msernst. Their post attracted massive amounts of attention and drew high levels of activity to the /msernst line.
Cult or Just Weird: A podcast that made an episode on the /msernst line. They were also able to interview Andrew Badr, the creator of YWOT.
"The Line": Another name for the diagonal line from /msernst. The Line was extremely popular in the early 2010s but has since been forgotten. It was brought back into public awareness in 2020, when Cult or Just Weird covered it in an episode.
/msernst: The world where "The Line" was from.
Though /msernst seems to have been relatively popular even before it was advertised on r/AskReddit.
/mebious: Mebious is a website whose URL can be seen in the 90's anime Serial Experiments Lain. A fan-made promotional website was created in 2013 and it had it's own YWOT subworld. It is responsible for the Lain community's presence on the website and is a potentially large source of traffic for YWOT, having more than 100,000 visitors as of 2024. Many users such as ~yosicat have discovered YWOT from it.
Jacob's Ladder: A popular subworld owned by Infraraven. Users are encouraged to climb an upwards ladder which supposedly extends beyond Y:10000.
WotD: An old YWOT tradition where Andrew Badr would feature various user worlds in the Spawn Box. A list of past WotDs can be found at https://www.yourworldoftext.com/~andrew/wotd.
/~fp/photgraphworlds: A world that hosts several large scale screenshots of the mainpage, the largest of which extend more than 1000 coordinates on all sides.Animation Scripts: Using scripts, it is possible to create the illusion of moving text objects by deleting and pasting images one after another. A popular example of this are roombas. On one occasion, LiquidVicinity was able to animate Bad Apple!! on YWOT.People of Nirvana: A society located at Y:10000 which has existed since before the 2015 Reset.
Big Tome of SPLATOON Guy: Located on the South Road. The Big Tome of SPLATOON Guy details the history of SPLATOON Guy from 2015 to 2020. Ozymandias, a user mentioned in the Tome, will be elaborated upon in the next tier of the iceberg.
Man Hating Zone: A notorious faction of feminist trolls that was active from 2015 to 2020.
They were possibly the largest user group in the site's history and has reportedly "won every ridiculous spam war" in YWOT.
Their world /~manhatingzone is currently private but apparently used to be the most active page in the entire site. Its OWOT counterpart is still active however.
The MHZ has largely moved on from YWOT. Today the most notable trace of their existence can be found along the True Diagonal.
Fastclient: The fastclient(formerly located at https://2s4.me/public/ywot/fastclient_v1_jul_25_2021.html) made YWOT load faster and enabled pasting. It also allowed users to zoom out way farther than 25%, which created the opportunity for incredibly fast scrolling at max zoom.
The fastclient was presumably created by /~fp/ and leaked out to the community by Jesse78(who found it through unknown means).
From Jesse78 it reached Yosicat, who gave it to Credrscr, who then publicized it to the YWOT Explorers, whose members began to use it as a fast-travel method.
The fastclient was taken offline sometime in 2024, around the period of the Great Ywotian Fog.
Vsauce/Ragnarok: The landmark located at [X:0 Y:100,000] is referred to as Vsauce in the current mainpage and Ragnarok in the 2015 mainpage. To this day Tellurian is the only user known to have scrolled to Y:100,000 by hand.
Tier 5[edit | edit source]
OWOT Warpserver: A now defunct script that allowed users to access OWOT features on YWOT.
Orteil: The Cookie Clicker developer. Orteil mentioned YWOT in a tweet on August 11th, 2020, one day after the start of the 2020 Lockdown.
rscr Timelapse: A series of timelapse videos that documented spawn from January 28th, 2021 to May 13th, 2023, with there being 1 - 3 screenshots for each day that passes.
The series was discontinued after the fifth entry, though Anonymousellama has been creating a larger timelapse since June 2022(it has not been released to the public however).
Zambonia: The settlement at [X:-100,000 Y:0], founded by Zambo and advertised throughout the West Road.
Arson Road: A spin-off of Dreamer's Road in the southeastern part of the Mainpage.

Tier 6[edit | edit source]
Christmas Lockdown: Andrew Badr locked the mainpage on December 21st, 2012 as an anti-spam measure. During this period almost all tiles were made uneditable and only a small faction of Mormons were allowed to edit the mainpage.
Christmas Lockdown: Andrew Badr locked the mainpage on December 21st, 2012 as an anti-spam measure. During this period almost all tiles were made uneditable and only a small faction of Mormons were allowed to edit the mainpage.
A snapshot of the lockdown can be found here. One of the Dot Field's more notable impacts was inspiring the creation of the SPLATOON Line, which was created in order to outmatch the field in size.
Keygen Church: An ASCII church that has appeared multiple times at Spawn(September 2021, September 2022, October 2023) and once in /forexample.
It contained a puzzle which is tied to the Keygen Church ARG.-

2015 Reset: Andrew Badr reset the mainpage on July 15th, 2015 in response to heavy spam.
Summer of 2015: A period of heavy spam which culminated in the 2015 mainpage reset.Throughout a lengthy conversation, Dzeni/Akumetsu was able to learn of the spammer's plans to grief a massive amount of subpages using a spider script.
Spider Scripts: Scripts that crawls through links and indexes them.
Spider scripts have been used to create lists of subpages.
Mainpage Archives: Archives of past versions of the mainpage.
"Everything in YWOT was written by a bot"/"Everything in YWOT was written by one person": The idea that everything in YWOT, every landmark, event and user, were either made by a bot or were the work of a single person. Throughout the site's history this theory has been made many times by many different users.
Soyjk.prty raids: Two separate raids by the website whose name Fandom will not let me spell. During each raid ASCII soyjaks would be repeatedly spammed at Spawn.-
June 12th, 2021
YWOT Stamping Tournament: A tournament to leave messages 536870911 coordinates away from spawn, which is presumably the farthest point where edits will be saved.
*If you scroll 100,000 coordinates per day then it would take over 14 years to reach 536,870,911.
Church of Anal: A faction from around 2015. Its founder was a user named (something along the lines of) Archbishopanal. Not much more is known about this group and it's unclear how big of a presence it was.Hacker City: The city located at X:100,000. As of August 2024 Mandrake is the only user to have reached Hacker City legitimately.
403 Forbidden: A bug(possibly an anti-spam measure) that timed users out for sending too many requests. This system was extremely sensitive and could be triggered just by typing too fast.
Users who encountered this error would be met with the following message:
403 Forbidden nginx/1.11.2
This screen lasted for 5 minutes.
The "403 Forbidden" bug was addressed at one point and has not been seen since 2020.-

Scripts that track user locations: Scripts that reveal the locations of all users on the mainpage(Ex. Spitfire's online list).
Albeit rare, these scripts have enabled multiple conversations at distant coordinates.
More recently, Anonymousellama21 was able to collect information on when and where users disconnect from YWOT.
Awakens.me: "The chat that never sleeps"
Awakens.me was a chatroom whose URL was pasted throughout YWOT in the form of blue underscores.
The chat, now rebranded as wokecat.com, features many veteran YWOT users such as Sammich, Kevin and JA. Jesse78 is also an active user(and possibly the owner, please confirm if true).
Ghost/Fog Text: A phenomenon where users would see chunks of text flash on their screens before disappearing. These fragments of "Ghost Text" were most likely visions of edits made elsewhere on the page(Ex. When a user writes something at Spawn, someone traveling on the North Road may see fragments of it as ghost text).
Ghost text is also referred to as Fog Text since the fragments often appear inside unloaded areas of the screen.
It is theorized that Ghost/Fog Text can be edited before they disappear, and that the edits would then carry over to wherever the Ghost Text originated from(Ex. Think back to the previous example. If the North Road traveler edits the ghost text before it disappears then the edit has a chance to be carried back to Spawn). There is very little proof of this, however, and a subsequent attempt to edit Ghost Text has resulted in a user being teleported back to Spawn.
It has also been hypothesized that ghost text can be used as a means of teleportation.
Ghost/Fog Text have stopped appearing ever since the 2021 update by Andrew Badr.
Tier 7[edit | edit source]
Overtown: A settlement that was supposedly located at X:10000 in the 2015 archive.
North Road Anomalies(2010 - 2015): Various anomalies that appear along the North Road within the 2010 and 2015 archives. These include large masses of alt codes and a section of Spam Central that has been pasted onto Y:6666.
Jon Line: An early southern line in the 2010 mainpage.
The After: A variation of an ASCII survival game named The Travelers which allows the player to make ASCII art in game.-

Infinity Explorer: A wiki page created by Fandom user Andrej is the best on March 2nd, 2020. The Infinity Explorer is a traveler of insane feats who has visited the farthest reaches of the mainpage.
JotLeaf: Another website created by Andrew Badr. JotLeaf enabled users to create infinite webpages similar to YWOT, except in this case users could also upload images, videos and music.
The site has since been taken down and few screenshots are available. The best model for its appearance comes from fornowband.org, a link on Andrew Badr's website which matches many descriptions of JotLeaf."Andrew Badr can rewind time": InfraRaven stated on the Unofficial Discord that he has seen Andrew Badr "rewind time" in the mainpage.
Music Trail: A prominent northern trail in the 2010 North Road. The anonymous creator of the Music Trail has been dubbed "The Musician" by many 2010 travelers.
Rest of /msernst: Though it is mainly known for The Line in the modern day, /msernst contains a variety of other trails that span multiple thousands of coordinates.

North Road Elevator: A trail in the 2010 North Road. Most of it was erased by Fang, who frowned upon it for being a script-generated path. Despite this, many users remembered it fondly even up to the time of the 2015 archive.
Paradise: The precursor to Sky City in the 2010 and 2015 North Roads. Paradise was created by A.A. in 2010 and has since been griefed and restored countless times.
walloftext.co: A YWOT/OWOT clone similar to Textwall.cc, except text is grouped into "blobs" that can be moved around the page and stacked on top of one another.[3]
Instead of a chaotic public sandbox, walloftext.co was intended primarily for note-taking/brainstorming purposes.[4] Suffice to say the website quickly fell down the path of its predecessors.
art.duckgroup.xyz: An OWOT clone that is now defunct.
Poemsville: A small settlement located at a very, very far off place in the mainpage.
"Satan" Facebook Page: An obscure early 2010s Facebook page where InfraRaven was introduced to YWOT.
UPLB: One of the top universities from the Philippines and in the era of the Facebook "University Secret Files" in the country around 2016, an admin of a rant page decided to use a YWOT subworld as an anonymous forum populated by the scholars of UPLB. It serves a little glimpse into the thoughts of the general student populace.
The Blockheads Furry Server: A furry roleplaying server in a 2.5D Minecraft clone named The Blockheads. User Cetfen found YWOT from an advertisement listed in the server.-

Tier 8[edit | edit source]
Countless details in unexplored areas and obscure subworlds:
Stuff lost to obscurity after being griefed:
Academic Resources/Articles: Along with multiple references on Google Scholar,[5] YWOT was also part of a Digital Poetry course[6][7] from 2010.
First Northern Line: One of the first vertical trails, which existed in 2009 from October 5th to October 20th. Unlike most modern trails, this line ran directly through the center, serving as both a northern and southern line simultaneously.
Lag City: One of the first notable landmarks in the site's history.
Lag City was created in 2009 at Y: 72 in Old Coordinates(around Y: 130 in current coordinates). It received its name from the heavy lag present in YWOT at the time, which led to most users disconnecting before they could reach the city.
Old Coordinates: A different coordinate system was used in 2009, when the site was first created.
Paradise Soundtrack by A.A.: Paradise had an "official soundtrack" which was linked at Y: 1000 by A.A. As the link no longer works, it is unclear whether this was an album of original music or simply a playlist of pre-existing songs.Oldest Known Message on YWOT: The oldest known message on YWOT was discovered by Yosicat in a subworld that will not be disclosed here. It was written on August 7th, 2009, just three days after YWOT was first advertised.
A message next to it was dated August 8th, 2009, potentially making it the second oldest message in all of YWOT.
???Black Fog???: A bug where unloaded chunks appear black instead of grey. The black chunks disappear when clicked on.
So far, the only confirmed sighting of "Black Fog" has been in late 2021. Aside from this, the only possible indication of its existence comes from a West Road message which references black rectangles flashing on a user's screen. The earliest known mentions of /msernst were from May 31st, 2010.[8][9] It seems as though many users were introduced to this subworld directly and had no knowledge of the mainpage.
4chan subworlds: This is one of the most closely guarded secrets in YWOT. Nobody from the inside will bother telling you, so your best hopes of ever finding one is if you were to somehow guess the subworld coupled with the owner's name correctly.
/4chansports: /sp/, the 4chan sports board, created their own YWOT subworld on July 19th, 2012.[10] The owner of the world(presumed to be /~InfraRaven) challenged users to scroll as far north as possible in order to prove the severity of their autism.
The world experienced rapid growth over the course of three days, with many cities being built and some users scrolling as far up as Y:12,000.
4chan thread(s) where YWOT first gained popularity:
ycentral/YWOTI: A secret cabal of YWOT's most influential elites, in which numerous other projects were conceived(including a chatroom which would serve as a predecessor to wokecat.com/awakens.me).
