Moving Text Objects

A moving text object leaving behind afterimages as a result of lag.

In YWOT, it is possible to create the illusion of movement by pasting and deleting text in quick succession.

The resulting motion tends to be rather janky as a result of the site's rate limits. Scripts that create moving text objects are also known to suffer from lag, causing them to leave trails of afterimages in their wakes.

So far, all known instances of moving text objects have been found at Spawn.

*For information on interactive games within YWOT(which most likely featured moving text objects), see YWOT Games.

Boxland[edit | edit source]

The user Experimenter created various moving text objects as part of the Boxland storyline.

March 24th, 2021(I shot this on an iPad because I didn't know how to record my screen back then.)

These included:

  1. ASCII Pac-Mans that ate everything in their paths, opening and closing their mouths as they moved.
    • This script seemed to have existed since long before Boxland.
  2. Bombs that moved downwards before turning into explosions.
  3. A massive triangular projectile.

Roombas/Zoombis[edit | edit source]

Created by The Janitor and Moth Cult(M) in order to clean up Spawn.

Falling Sands Script[edit | edit source]

A script created by The Janitor to rearrange block characters at Spawn. In the beginning, this would overload the site with requests and create lag for all users. Since then The Janitor has presumably fixed this issue.

UFOs[edit | edit source]

ASCII UFOs that suck up text.

Moving Snails[edit | edit source]

March 1st, 2024(Best footage we have at the moment. You can see the snails moving at the top left corner.)

LiquidVicinity created ASCII snails that could crawl around the page.

Plans have been made to update the snails so that they would retreat into their shells when a cursor is placed next to them.

Miscellaneous Moving Text Objects[edit | edit source]

Car and Moth[edit | edit source]

A Moth and a Car, created by Mr. Black on August 31st, 2024.

Unlike their predecessors, these creations featured different models for traveling in different directions. Moreover, they would restore any text they moved over(whereas all other moving text objects simply deleted everything in their paths).

A test for the Moving Moth model, or perhaps an earlier version that did not delete its afterimages(August 29th, 2024).
September 2nd, 2024

The moving car has also appeared in Our World of Text, where it was significantly faster due to higher rate limits.

Bunny and Pacman[edit | edit source]

Possibly also created by Mr. Black.
